Koryo Hand Therapy and Hemokinesis in the Next Millennium

By Tae Woo Yoo, O.M.D., Ph.D.
(Edited by Dr. Dan Lobash, Ph.D., L.Ac.)

As you know, it will not be long until the next millennium and a new thousand-year cycle will start. I will begin this new millennium with more intensive research into the control of pain through balancing the blood flow to the brain, or hemokinesis. My presentations at the Pacific Symposium will concern this topic. I think that this will be a very fertile avenue of future research. In recent times, there has been a lot of research into the cause and cure of pain, but thus far the results have not been satisfactory, in my estimation.

In the area of natural medicine, the methods of treating pain still rests on the alternative therapies such as herbal therapy, drug therapy, electrical stimulation, manual therapy and acupuncture needle stimulation therapy. However, most of these methods are symptomatic approaches. Typically these methods are not fundamental, root methods of treatment.

Often, when treating the pain, we aim only at the improvement of symptoms without confirming, or being able to confirm, whether or not the treatment is effective and whether the causal disease is curable. It is the reality of current treatment with acupuncture that we treat the patient with ambiguous expectations rather than certainty about the outcomes. Therefore, there are limits to our ability to treat pain under the present theories and systems of acupuncture.

I think we need to re-evaluate and research our approach to treating pain based on current theories of meridian acupuncture. There are pains we are able to treat and those we are less effective in treating with our present understanding. Unfortunately, acupuncture as now practiced is not able to cure all of the pain syndromes we encounter in our clinical work. We need to conduct fundamental research and develop new theories in acupuncture so that we can become even more effective in our diagnosis and treatment. I am now conducting new research into Koryo Hand Therapy and new methods of treatment, such as, ¡°Yeom Pa Therapy¡± (which translates as mind vibration), KHT Food Therapy and the Circulation of Qi. My presentations and workshops at Pacific Symposium will focus on Koryo Hand Therapy as a very effective means to control pain and alleviate suffering among people of the world.

To eliminate pain effectively, we should also study the theories of treatment and stimulation. The pain mechanism that we understand so far is that we perceive the stimulation of pain through transmission from peripheral nerves to the brain. However, natural pain, except for bruises or local injury of tissue, is perceived, interpreted and modified by the brain, or generated from the disorder of the brain (¡°central pain¡±) in cases of brain injuries or infection. As a result, the brain feels the pain more severely as the symptoms of the locality deteriorate. That is, the pain is generated from the disturbance of the brain, and the brain perceives the severe pain as the disease of the locality worsens. The core of pain is in the cerebrum. Thus, we should regulate the function of the brain to treat the pain. But it is still quite difficult to understand the functional state of the brain. In KHT, we use a specialized form of pulse diagnosis (which we call the ¡°EP Test¡±) that gives us a clear understanding of the functional state of the brain. This pulse diagnosis allows us to determine the amount and balance of hemokinesis ( blood flow ) to the brain. By determining the amount and balance of hemokinesis of the brain, you can also determine the extent and location of the disease, as well as the confirmation of the effects of the treatment. Thus, it is necessary to diagnose the amount of hemokinesis of the brain. However, the methods of treatment, which can effect the hemokinesis of the brain, are limited. In traditional Oriental acupuncture, the areas of the body which can have some effects on the hemokinesis of the brain, are limited to areas of the hands, neck, and wrist and elbow joints. But the other parts of the body, such as foot, face, and head, are confirmed through my research not to affect the amount of the hemokinesis of the brain.

My research in KHT indicates that there are various methods and guiding theories to influence the hemokinesis of the brain, but one of the most forceful methods is ¡°Sooji Yeom Pa Therapy.¡± I have not taught this method extensively in the U.S. as yet. Sooji Yeom Pa Therapy is the method of regulating the hemokinesis of the brain by giving stimulation to the hand, using ¡°mental power¡± according to the theories of Koryo Hand Therapy. This Yeom Pa Therapy is the most powerful method of treatment.

I believe Yeom Pa Therapy will become recognized as a powerful method of treatment in the future. I had an opportunity to demonstrate this approach at the Pacific Symposium in San Diego in 1990. This is an unusual method of treatment, but I believe that the time is right to teach Yeom Pa Therapy and I believe it will be performed and practiced worldwide, just like the worldwide internet.

I discovered and studied Koryo Hand Therapy from 1971 to 1975. KHT originated from the theory that all internal organs are represented reflexively in the hands. Stimulating the proper points in the hands can control all of the functions of human organs. As I systematically developed the KHT theory, I made every attempt to validate my theories and conclusions scientifically. Various prescriptions and methods of treatment can be confirmed effective through scientific explanation. These are some of the strengths of the KHT approach.

Up to the present time, there are estimated to be about two million Koreans who have experienced KHT and can attest to the effectiveness of this method of treatment. The textbook Koryo Hand Acupuncture: Volume 1 has been translated into English, German, French, Japanese, Spanish, and Russian. There are over 70 other publications concerning some aspect of KHT. We have also developed 100 types of health instruments used in KHT. Doctors from all over the world are asking to learn KHT.

So I hope everyone can learn KHT and join me in conducting research on the new theories of pain management using KHT, as we start into the next 1000-year cycle.
